SPLATTERED GOODNESS

It's been a long time since I've seen a makeup that was uniquely executed, simple in design, yet powerful in presentation. Having worked many many years in beauty and fashion, I've been privy to just about every trick of the trade, exposed to every type of graphic liner you can think of, and can create every version of "dewy, glowy, strobing" skin. However, this morning, I woke up to my Instagram feed saturated with eye catching beauty close ups from Issey Miyake's Spring Summer 2016, that made me feel something; I just could not resist its creative allure.

Performance makeup artist, Alex Box created a unique makeup look for the show that I instantly fell in love with. The skin was left clean and simple while the focus being an obvious pop of colourful, splattered eye makeup. What made this look unique in design and execution, was that Box laid down the models and used a straw to blow the pigment onto the corner of the eyes. This technique most definitely was the reason why the graphic design took on an organic, splattering shape. Utilizing a blowing method to disperse and spread out the product resulted in some areas being sheer and some opaque, this gave the overall design an ink blot effect and watercolour-esque stain as the finish. Genius.

I have been fortunate enough to attend one of Alex Box's Master Classes in New York, to witness this woman in action. Her brilliance goes beyond executing creative makeup or having precision application. Box has developed a unique style by fusing Performance and Fine Arts with her makeup artistry. Her most recent splattered goodness is just another example of her level of creativity. Thank you Alex Box for putting the art back in makeup artistry.
