GOLD 001

Yesterday was a good day to be a beauty editor for top print and online publications. Why? you ask. Because it meant you probably received a gold package from the most famous makeup artist in the world, Pat McGrath. The mother of makeup launched her long awaited website yesterday morning that previewed the first product to come out of Pat McGrath Labs called Gold 001. The product itself seemed to be a highly frosted, superfine, yellow gold pigment that has been packed into a dome shape. Accompanying the gold pigment are tools to use with the product, a spatula and Mehron Mixing Liquid, which for makeup artists everywhere knows that's code for multi-purpose. McGrath told Refinery29 she did not want to label it as an eyeshadow since it could be used anywhere, "For me, this pigment has no limits. You can use it in so many different ways — mix it with the mixing medium, water, eye primer... place it on your eyes, lips, cheeks, wherever you like! It has no rules and no limits!"
I completely agree with McGrath's statement about the product. While I haven't had the opportunity to see it in person, high sheen and opaque colour payoff in a product typically means it can be versatile. This is briefly demonstrated on the videos in the website, the shine and application of the product glides on and is almost molten-like. At only 1,000 pieces available for purchase, that means Gold 001 is LIMITED. This also means I will more than likely not be able to get my hands on one for 2 reasons. 1) Lack of effort 2) My makeup artist friends are not going to give me a "sample" of theirs even if I smile for them. Oh well, guess I'll need to crush up actual sequins, and grind them into fine particles, mix it with some of MAC's Reflects Gold Glitter and call it a day.
By the way, as much as I love Pat McGrath and everything she touches does turn to gold, I would like to point out my confusion with the marketing of Gold001. Upon seeing the images below, I have listed my initial thought process in chronological order:

1) Did Pat McGrath really just package sequins and passed them off as pigment?
2) Maybe the pigments were cut to look like sequins which means this was shot macro...
3) Wait! The sequins ARE the powdered pigments! That's why there is a spatula, Mehron Mixing Medium and the final product pressed. YES, I figured it out! WOW, Miz McGrath really is a genius.
4) Oh...
5) Genius marketing (no shade). I can't wait till one of my makeup artist friends gets one so I can still beg for a teenie sample because who doesn't want something that looks like liquid gold?
Gold001 will be available for purchase on October 29th at 12 pm on patmcgrath.com.
